Presentation of the Course

The course consists of three sections, a self-study series of notes and activities, a Manual consisting of notes and examples, and online activities designed to encourage interaction with both the materials and other candidates.

 Goals of the Course

 The overall goal of the course is to help editors or self-publishing authors improve their confidence and competence in editing textbooks and other educational materials in English. Completing this course will enhance their ability to organize educational materials into a logical structure.

 More specifically, the objectives of the course are to enable the editor to:

 Plan and organize a textbook using the principles of instructional design;

  • Conduct a substantive edit of a document, improving organization and language while ensuring consistency;
  • Copyedit to produce a well-written final document.

 In addition, there are detailed sectional learning objectives to support the overall goal and the three major objectives.

 It is recognized that editors do many more tasks than this: they may also be responsible for contacting potential writers, communicating with printers, keying in text, indexing and many other tasks. This three-module course will focus on the basics of planning and editing a document.

 Assessment

The assignments for this course are interconnected. The editor will be asked to complete self assessment tasks as well as interact with other candidates online in structured, assessed discussion forums, plan and edit components of a course textbook. A port folio of evidence will be submitted online for final assessment.

The skills editors develop will help them plan and edit any type of textbook. The skills will also be useful if their work involves directing the work of writers, editors, copyeditors, proofreaders and others involved in the book production process.

 Duration of the Course

This is a 15-credit course that should be completed in 150 hours. Enrollment for the first offering of the course has already begun. The next course will start on 23 April and the final date for the submission of portfolios is 31 July.

I hope you enjoy the experience.
